Is it good luck or bad luck?

There was once an old trader who had a donkey for transporting his material to the other village for sale. One day the donkey escaped into the hills and, when all the trader’s neighbors sympathised with the old man over his bad luck, the trader replied, ‘Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?’

A week later the donkey returned with a herd of wild donkeys from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the trader on his good luck. His reply was, ‘Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?’

Then, when the trader’s son attempted to tame one of the wild donkeys, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this very bad luck. Not the trader, whose only reaction was, ‘Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?’

Some weeks later the army marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied youth they found there. When they saw the trader’s son with his broken leg they let him off. Now was that good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?

Moral: God alone knows what is good or bad for us. Therefore have trust in God in all situations of life. And believe that which God does, is best for us.
